My trip to the ancient burial ground was very informative. To begin with, that was my first trip to New York so I was excited by that fact. But when I got there I was overwhelmed by a since of pride. To know that my people were once standing and buried in the exact place I was standing. And they were still aware of where they came from in Africa was amazing to me. And even though it may have seemed like the remains were found on accident I do not believe it was. I'm happy to know that our people will not be forgotten. The part that Howard University played burial ground was a part that I do not believe would have been right. Howard being known as the "Mecca" makes is the most appropriate place for our ancestors to have been documented. The memorial that was visible was only a fraction of what is believed to be the complete burial ground. There are believed to be as many as 10,000 of our ancestors buried within a few acres. But the heart wrenching discovery was that most of the bodies buried in the burial ground were children. This could have been due to malnutrition and different illnesses, but it is still sad. After leaving the burial ground we spent a few hours in Harlem. In my time in Harlem I walked around and got to see the New York culture. Overall the trip to the African Burial Ground is one that I will be sure to take my children. Every generation needs to be aware of there ancestors.
